Dear friends of Sanlian zhongdu/

My name is Nathalie Bondil, I’m French and Canadian. I live in Montreal. I'm the director and chief curator of Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

so I am the director of Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Montreal Museum Fine Arts is the most ancient art museum in Canada. It has been created in 1860, and now this is the most attended museum, art museum in Canada. We have 42,000 works. What is interesting is that it is an encyclopedic museum. So we have a fine arts, international arts from all masters, like impressionist like Monet, Renoir, Degas , but also, of course, Canadian arts. And we have a great collection of decorative arts and design, fabulous one, and of course we have contemporary arts, and a very nice collection of world cultures including Chinese art, of course.

The museum has been built through a one century and fifty years. So now it is a complex with five buildings. And it's a rather large complex. With these five buildings, we expanded very fast. We opened two new buildings within five years, including a building with a professional concert hall with music, and this is rather unusual. We will have a new cinema hall next in few months. And the museum is the eighteenth most important museum, largest museum in North American.

In fact, our museum is a private, even it's founded and granted by the provincial state. We received Michal Horns’s collection, thanks to donors, private donors and this is why we have such a diversity of collections. Because each donor had his own passion, so this is why we have a great collection of old masters, or we have a fabulous collection of design. And it’s all because of the individuals’ passions; the museum right now has no boundaries. It is extremely open minded. And I must say that we can have all kind of exhibitions including old cultures, fashion, cinema, and we do like very xxxx shows. This is one of our great talents I would say.

Well, of course, it's really difficult to choose only three pieces. I would say for me, following my taste, we have a fabulous work by  Honoré Daumier, you know the romantic French painter.

One of the biggest painting he made it's two fabulous women escaping from two satyrs, and this painting has been criticized a lot, because it has been created with a lot of fierce, And now it is considered as a masterpiece from Honoré Daumier.

西斯莱(Alfred Sisley),《秋天:塞纳河边》“Autumn: Banks of the Seine near Bougival” ,现收藏于蒙特利尔博物馆

We have a wonderful painting from the Sisley for example, you know the impressionist, but this one is the, we do have several works by Sisley, but this one has been on display at the very first exhibition of the impressionists in 1874. So it’s a treasury.

I would say that we have a great work, very rare from the Dogon, from the Mali in Africa. It’s a sculpture from Mali.

奥托·迪克斯(Otto Dix) ,《律师雨果·西蒙斯的肖像》“Portrait of the Lawyer Hugo Simons”

Yes I have to choose another one, so yes yes, we have a great painting by Otto Dix. Otto Dix is a very very important German painter.

It is a portrait of a lawyer Hugo Simons. And this painting has an incredible story, because in fact, it represents a Jew, escaping  Hugo Simons, and in fact, this painting escaped from the Nazis to Canada. And it's a great story of friendship between the painter, the German painter and the donor, the lawyer, who and they remain friends even after the Second World War.

And this painting has been given to our museum because the family of Hugo Simons was so grateful towards Montreal, because Montreal open its arms towards those immigrants coming from, escaping from this Second World War, and we have it as a jewel in our collection.

In fact many people not just from Montreal, but also from Canada, pay for this painting because everybody wanted to keep it as a treasure in Canada. So, it's a very very important and symbolic painting for all of us.

Yes it's a very touching story, absolutely! So we have many stories like that because many Jews came to Montreal during the Second World War and we have incredible stories of such victims and for many of them, it’s because they wanted to thank the city for welcoming them that's after that they gave the collection to our museum.

It’s exactly the same story for the new pavilion for peace. We have a new building, we just opened one year ago, and the name is pavilion for peace. Why? because it has been built thanks to the money, the grant and the collection from two incredible donors, two people from Poland, who also flew from the second world war, and because they were Jews, and they decided when they were very old, to grant not only the museum but also hospitals and also universities, so there are wonderful example for all of us, and it's very important for us to remind those great ancestors.

Tintam Male Figure”

Yes so we have an incredible collection of African art, the collection is not very big but for some reasons we have a fabulous piece, very very rare, they dated seventeenth century.

It is an ancestor seated on a chair, and it's comes from the Mali, it is a Dogon sculpture, made in wood. And as you know, wood, especially from the seventeenth century in Africa are very rare, because of the conservation issues, and this example is absolutely incredible and has been exhibited everywhere so this is a treasure we have in our collection.

We have also an incredible imperial armchair, throne, coming from the end of the Ming dynasty, the seventeenth century. And it's all in lacquer and look very very rich texture and we just discovered because we have a higher Curator for Chinese art in our collection. And now there was really incredible object because we didn't know that we had such a wonderful example of  Emperor throne, so this is also a treasure we will put on display within one year in our new ways for world cultures.

Yeah, the most impressive moment for me, yeah, let me think about that, I think that, once I was Curator because I'm an art historian, so I curated an exhibition on Cuban arts, and it was ten years ago.

And this time Cuba and the United States were of course, in great tension. and the goal of this exhibition was really to show Cuban art coming from Cuba, coming from United States, in Canada. but Canada is such a peaceful country, so we were able to gather the best of the art, not only from Cuba, but also from United States, from new York, from Florida, all together in Montreal and that was a fabulous moment because everybody was so enchanted to see each other, and to discover, and to be so gratified with the beauty of Cuban art, without thinking about the war, about political tensions, so this is magic of Montreal.

And it was a great great moment for me as a human being. A museum is a perfect place where we can educate with our hearts not just with our brain because as human being, we have to learn not just with cognition, but also with our sensibility. And art is all about aesthetic emotion. And one is not a robot, were also animal. And so art is very important if we want to balance our rational and emotional behavior.
